Roman Mithraism was devoted to the emperors and was the religion of the army, government functionaries and civil servants. etc. and was the chief competitor of early Christianity: it practically ceased to exist once Constantine and the government embraced Christianity – one could say it became Christianity. Mythra’s birth on December 25th was depicted as attended by shepherds and Mythrain sanctuaries were caves. But so many of the other similarities with Christianity I once learned (virgin birth, 12 disciples, resurrection, etc.) seem to have been aggressively refuted since… so it’s hard to know what’s what. Christianity’s success certainly depends upon appropriation/merger.

I am very pleased to have encountered your blog; keep the (lack of) faith.

    p.s. FYI, Ohio’s not flat.
